GW-JCRI Plasma Medicine Program

Plasma Medicine Program (PMP) is major part of GW Institute for Nanotechnology and aims to revolutionize cancer therapy by introducing novel modality in cancer treatment based on cold plasma. This is a multidisciplinary effort to examine a new cancer treatment modality that uses a cool-to-the-touch jet of ionized gases, or cold atmospheric plasma (“CAP”). PMP combines engineering and cancer biology science to further develop this novel technique for cancer treatment and will provide means to control plasma action and understand the underlying mechanism of CAP selectivity. The PMP will enable the transition of this novel technology into translational and clinical stages.

This newly funded program expands the research collaboration between Dr. Keidar and Jerome Canady, chief science officer of the Jerome Canady Research Institute for Advanced Biological and Technological Sciences (JCRI-ABTS), chairman of the USPI board of managers and noted surgeon. Together Dr. Keidar, Dr. Canady, consulting scientists and other subsidiaries of USPI will explore potential applications for cold atmospheric plasma in the treatment of breast, brain, gastrointestinal, colorectal, ovarian, cervical, lung and skin cancers.

This program was launched in September 2017.
